ETHICS

THE UDVL APPROACH TO ETHICS

The UDVL is committed an ethical approach to digital investigations, upholding ‘do no harm’ as a cardinal principle. The lab is cognizant and supportive of the ongoing development of the field of digital investigations, and it fully intends to implement the latest contributions to the field where best practicable. In turn, the lab also aspires to contribute to the field itself, in turn.

ETHICS IN CONTEXT

The UDVL is guided by the Professional, Methodological, and Ethical Principles established by the Berkeley Protocol on Digital Open Source Investigations (2019). Our interpretations of these include the following:

PROFESSIONAL

Ensuring the accountability, legality, competency, objectivity, legality, and security of our projects and of our personnel.

Methodological

Through our projects and personnel prioritizing the security, accuracy, minimization of data, and preservation of material.

Ethical

The UDVL and its personnel endeavor to treat the victims and their material with dignity and to investigate with the humility of what remains unknown with inclusivity at the core of our teams, with independence from external influences, and with transparency about the its methods and results.
